Featue #158 Damian Mulinix ‘ odyssey of a career’

As his mum likes to say, Damian was “born on a dark and stormy night” on the edge of the west coast in 1977.
After first learning photography while working as a reporter at his hometown newspaper, the Triplicate while a junior in high school in 1994, Damian began this odyssey of a career. Over the last two decades he has spent time at a variety of newspapers in California, Oregon and Washington, including the Columbian, the (now defunct) Springfield News, the News-Register and, for the last 10 years, the Chinook Observer.  Damians photography has been honored by both the Pictures of the Year International and the Best of Photojournalism competitions — not bad for working at a weekly paper with barely a 5,000 circ. He won the Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Photographer’s Portfolio award four years in a row, and was named Photographer of the Year three times by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. Damian has been a featured speaker at the WNPA annual convention and the Bellingham Visual Journalism Conference. And he has shot hundreds of stories about small town life, as well as NBA basketball and the Womens World Cup, and have taken advertising commissions through Leo Burnett Worldwide.

In his “spare time” Damian shoots street photography in Portland, he’s currently working on a street photography project which he hopes may result in a book of work.
