Jose Bernaldo de Quirós is a 35 year old, London based self-taught photographer. Despite always having an interest in photography at some level it wasn’t until around 5 years ago when he stumbled upon the medium of street photography that he started to take his snapping more seriously. Street Photography changed his idea of photography. Architectural and Portraiture had never really stirred enough emotion in Jose to really pursue it any further so it wasn’t until he started looking at street photographers work that he found something that really inspired him. The still image has the power to capture and amplify emotion, enhance a feeling or distort reality. It provides a sense of mystery that encourages the observer to ask questions. There are no rules and each photo is an open question.
Street Photography has changed the way that Jose looks at everything. Searching out the extraordinary in everyday life and looking for patterns in the chaos and unpredictability of the urban environment. It was Jose’s love of Street Photography that made him sell his digital SLR and lenses. He felt that his bulky kit created a barrier between him and his subjects and became a chore carrying it around for hours. Jose now shoots on a M4/3 system allowing him greater anonymity sometimes required to get that all important sense of intimacy.
