Gene Lowinger has been a musician his entire adult life. He started playing fiddle with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys in 1965 and moved on to study classical violin and subsequently to play in the New York City freelance business. Gene began shooting film in 1985 on scuba diving trips and fell in love with photography. He worked as a freelance
photojournalist for a number of years before retiring. Gene continued to shoot musicians and street scenes. The University of Illinois Press published a book of his memoirs which included many photographs of bluegrass musicians. Gene Lowinger is currently working on a book project to publish his New York City street images.
