Feature #128 Greg Jacobs ‘There’s an energy in the street’

Greg Jacob’s first attraction to photography was in high school, seeing his friends running around campus with cameras instead of sitting in math class. He wanted to be running around with a camera and not doing algebra. So Greg took a photo class and discovered that he really loved it. He loved taking pictures, processing film, working in the darkroom and showing and getting a reaction to my photos. Soon Greg had converted a bathroom in his house to a dark room and was printing at home.

Continuing shooting through high school and into college; taking black & white and color film classes. After college, He put the camera down for a long time … finally, about 2008 Greg started helping a couple friends’ bands and thought it would be fun to document the adventures. So he bought a digital camera, a DSLR. Although he wasn’t intimidated by the camera at first. The manual was thick and daunting and instead of reading it, He took a class called “getting to know your digital camera” at a local camera shop. This class really set him in motion and from that day on, He’s carried a camera with him everywhere he goes. Literally. Greg has been asked what kind of photography he does … His answer is simple and basic … “I like to take pictures of stuff I think looks cool. I should probably smarten that up a bit by saying: I like the juxtaposition of industry and nature, of street and city, water and sky and how people interact within it … but that’s not me. I just like to take pictures of stuff I think looks cool. I shoot landscapes, clouds, powerlines, urban environments, bands, bus stops, birds … I’ve never really had a photographic concentration” … But for the last year or so, Greg has been all about street photography. He loves walking the streets and taking pictures. There’s an energy in the street, especially in a downtown environment, that he loves. There’s a beauty in the hustle and bustle of a city, in the interaction between the tourists and locals, the businesspeople and the homeless, the affluent and the poor …There’s an energy down there that Greg wants to capture.

Feature #127 Micheal Sweet ‘random bits of people – the human fragment.’

Michael Ernest Sweet is an award-winning Canadian educator, writer and photographer. His first full-length published collection of street photography is forthcoming in the winter of 2013 from Brooklyn Arts Press in New York City. Michael works mostly in Montreal and in New York City. He uses the Ricoh GR Digital most of the time. His work is somewhat unique as he uses a 28mm and works very close to people. He also has a haphazard framing style and often Michael work features people with missing heads or arms of whatever. He focuses on random bits of people – the human fragment.

Jonathan Taylor from Stoke on Trent UK, is a music loving, Father of two, who’s passion is street photography.

Street photography to Jonathan is an uncensored way of capturing life as it unfolds around us. It captures the spirit of environments and drama of everyday life. The beauty for him is, not knowing what will be caught on camera. It is the excitement of not knowing what opportunities will present themselves on the turn of the next corner. There is no agenda or brief. It is simply all about capturing those brief moments in life, which at the time have no significance, but then become purposeful as they have been frozen to create a photograph.

Guibert Didier has always enjoyed street photography (since 40 years), it allows him to capture life as it is, the moment,the reflection, the emotions, the small gestures. It’s like an immersion into another reality. Guibert favorite place to observe is downtown Paris where he has been trying to capture the unusual in everyday moment. He’s fond of most of the humanist photographers with a certain preference for : R.Doisneau, W.Ronis, H.Cartier Bresson, E. Erwitt. Street is unique and there is something special about shooting the diversity of humanity. Guibert is attracted by the many slices of life it offers. He desires to focus more on street close up portraits.

Feature #124 Ricardo Barros Figueira ‘a mode of self-expression’

Ricardo Barros Figueira aka rbfigueira, was born in 1973 and living in Lisbon, Portugal. He is a computer programmer (full time) but spends a significant amount of time doing street photography.

Street photography is all about telling stories, and also a mode of self-expression. When you look at the images of a street photographer, you are also getting a look into their soul. It fascinates to Ricardo because it gives him an opportunity to develop himself artistically and personally. On top of that, photography gives Ricardo a break from the daily routine and lets him see the world in other perspectives. He truly believes the digital SLR is not only a lot of fun, but also goes a long way in helping one to grow their skills.

Darko Eterovic was born in Ljubljana, which is the capital town of Slovenia.Working in lab as a chemical techniques . Married and father of one daughter he started photography in 1995 with a film SLR, but photography become my real passion in January 2007, when Darko bought his first DSLR. Mostly he is interested in street photography and landscapes , but because Darko always runs out of time, he photograph almost everything. Darko uses a good old Pentax IST-DL camera with superb SMC DA 21mm F3,2 AL Limited or with kit SMC DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL lens.

Feature #122 Alan Horsager ‘how we see the world’

Alan Horsager is a photographer and vision neuroscientist residing in Los Angeles. Alan began shooting seriously in the mid 1990’s and has shot across a broad range of styles including fashion (IMG Models), editorial (Resonance Magazine and Detour), and stock photography (Getty Images). His more recent work is artistic and personal, combining street and travel styles that merge into a cinematic approach. Technically, he has used film and digital mediums; large, medium, and 35mm camera systems; and has created his own, homemade lenses for creative control over the images. These manipulations are inspired by an interest in understanding how we see the world and how subtle abstractions can have dramatic impact on how we view a two-dimensional image. His work as a neuroscientist at the University of Southern California focuses on the study of visual sensation and perception, including the development of sight-restoring therapies using light-sensitive proteins taken from algae

Feature #121 Courtney Bailey-Sutton ‘never had to chance to meet them’

Courtney Bailey-Sutton believes that photography can change a person’s life. Here’s her personal reasoning…. Her grandparents passed before Courtney was born, so she never had to chance to meet them. Her parents have made sure to save boxes of pictures, so between the pictures and the stories about them, she feels like she’s grown up with them around. When Courtney was little, she would look through the pictures for hours. If it wasn’t for those pictures, Courtney doesn’t think she would have felt the connection with her grandparents that she know does. Still to this day she looks through those boxes, which is why she feels is it SO very important to take pictures. She’s loved taking pictures from the time she was a child.

Know a 25 year old, self taught photographer (born and raised in a small town in West Virginia). Courtney graduated in 2009 from West Virginia University with a Bachelors in Sociology and Anthropology, with an emphasis in Criminology and a minor in Philosophy. She’s worked a few jobs out of college (that put use to her degree), but still didn’t feel like she was getting what she wanted out of life. Courtney like most photographers isn’t a “settle” type of girl. So when she got married in August of 2011, her husband told her to do what makes her happy, so Courtney quit her job and started her own photography business!!

Feature #120 Fernando Coelho ‘wondering the streets of Lisbon’

Fernando Coelho is a Portuguese amateur street photographer wondering the streets of Lisbon looking for the decisive moments, mainly humorous or ironic. Fernando has been photographing for a long time and normally was focuses on shooting macro and landscapes with his EOS 7D. Fernando discovered street photography in 2012 and since going to a street photography workshop at the Lisbon center he’s never stopped shooting and he is usually able to produced and post a rewarding street shot every day.

In Fernado’s view the main advantages of street photography is that your in the right mood to start shooting and have the luck of living in a busy place like Lisbon. Fernando’s main inspirations are Rui Palha and Thomas Leuthard, This is because most of Rui’s photos are made in Lisbon (my own city) and because his photos are really masterpieces where street photography meets fine art, and Thomas because of his amazing gift to “collecting” souls with his street portraits, cool street scenes and, of course, his fantastic e-books that were to me an enormous source of inspiration and street techniques.

Fernado’s photos try to capture street scenes that catch his eye and hopefully the eye and attention of his viewers, being most of the time humorous scenes, ironic or about interesting characters on their living environment.

Mikhail Palinchak Jr. is a 27 years old versatile photographer from Ukrainian but mostly street and urban photographer. Since 2005 reside in Kiev, Ukraine. Since 2008 member of National Union of Photographers of Ukraine. Since 2012 member of Ukrainian Photographic Alternative and Momentum street-photographers community. Up to this day allready had more than 10 personal and join exhibition in Ukraine and abroad, as well as publications in different catalogs and magazines.
